The Network Professionals team at Birmingham City Council is actively looking for a highly motivated Lead Infrastructure Engineer. This role provides an exciting opportunity to work with cutting-edge network technologies supplied by industry-leading vendors such as Cisco, Checkpoint, F5, and Smoothwall. The team manages a vast Wide Area Network (WAN) that extends over 200 sites, and the infrastructure caters to more than 10,000 users who deliver essential services to over a million residents in the city

The chosen candidate will become a valuable member of a dynamic team responsible for supporting the network infrastructure of Birmingham City Council (BCC). The position demands a skilled engineer who can maintain and enhance the network in accordance with the organisation’s operational needs. .  .    

What you will do

  • Lead the design, installation, and support on our Internet-facing Network Infrastructure  
  • Act as an SME for Web proxies, load balancers and associated technologies 
  • Provide 3rd Line support and mentoring to the team on your area’s expertise 
  • Be involved in multiple and varied project implementations concurrently 
  • Work closely with other areas of DTS including Security, Infrastructure, and Application teams 
  • Engage with 3rd parties, in a support context and in the evaluation of new products 
  • Produce quality documentation and work instructions and transition services into BAU
